Earth Day 2026

Earth Day is one of the largest secular observances in the world. It was initiated in 1970 and there are over one billion participants from over 193 countries. It is always observed on April 22nd and the theme this year is « OUR POWER, OUR PLANET »

The aim is to emphasise collective action and individual empowerment to drive for systematic change, accelerate clean energy through civic engagement and community efforts. It calls for verified global action to build a more sustainable future focusing on renewable energy and confronting polluters.

Around April 22nd Eastbourne is focussing on local biodiversity, sustainability and protecting our coast. Activities will include beach clean ups, educational nature walks, eco conscious workshops and local sustainable food initiatives, aligned with the broader Sussex based environmental initiatives.

We already know that our daily endeavours to reduce our carbon footprint are essential so it could be questioned why we need a designated day.

The greatest threats to Planet Earth is interconnected with climate change and biodiversity loss caused by human action like pollution, deforestation and unsustainable consumption leading to extreme weather, resource scarcity and ecosystem collapse. Other major risks include nuclear conflict, advanced AI and pandemics – all of which threaten our very existence. A designated day acts as a catalyst for fighting apathy and ignorance and to galvanise individuals, businesses and governments into action, as a matter of urgency.

Here at Emmanuel our Eco Church continues to strive to find yet more sustainable carbon footprints, both inside and out and as individuals. When we are walking by the sea, up on the Downs or enjoying parks and our garden we give thanks. We are reminded afresh that we are stewards of God’s wondrous creation as we continue our quest to save our planet and make every day an Earth Day.
