Life, Colour, and Newness: Reflecting on Holy Week at Emmanuel

Holy Week at Emmanuel was a powerful journey this year. From the quiet, reflective moments of our prayer vigil to the joyful energy of a packed Messy Church, we have seen our community strengthened and lives touched by the love of God.

A Week of Welcome and Witness

We kicked off the week with a truly special Palm Sunday. It was a joy to celebrate the baptism of Eliana and Jude Bawuah—a beautiful moment of new beginnings for their family. It was also a significant morning for our church as we officially welcomed a number of new members into the Emmanuel family, marking a wonderful start to the week’s journey.

That momentum carried straight into our Holy Week Messy Church. With nearly 100 people joining us, the building was at maximum capacity! It was a perfect blend of faith, food, and fellowship. A massive thank you to Sarah and her dedicated team of helpers who led the crafts, served up the bacon sarnies, and guided us in worship.

Walking the Path Together

As we moved into the solemnity of the week, the Maundy Thursday service at St. Barnabas provided a profound space for reflection. On Good Friday, we joined with our brothers and sisters from across the local churches for an ecumenical Walk of Witness, standing together in our shared faith before our Prayer Vigil offered a time of essential quiet and spiritual renewal.

Easter Sunday: Life in Full Colour

The culmination of our week was a vibrant Easter Sunday celebration led by Rev. Paul.

The day began with a fantastic spread prepared by Adrian and his team of chefs. With 60 of us gathered for breakfast, the sense of community was palpable. This “noisy fellowship” is such a vital part of who we are at Emmanuel.

During our All-Age Holy Communion, Rev. Paul led us in a beautiful physical transformation. We invited everyone to bring a flower, and together we turned our bare, barren cross into a symbol of colour, life, and beauty. The service was full of energy—including the now-established tradition of chocolate being thrown to the congregation!

The service also marked a poignant leadership transition, as we gave special recognition to Carol and Joshua who are stepping down after years of significant service. Their servant-hearted ministry was a powerful example of passing on the “relay baton” of leadership to the next generation.

Once the service concluded, the excitement continued as Sarah led the children in a grand Easter egg hunt right inside the sanctuary, searching for treats amidst the newly decorated cross.

Looking Forward

As we look back, we are reminded that the love of God is present in every craft, every prayer, and every shared egg. We are so grateful to everyone who helped, attended, or prayed for these events.

May the joy of the risen Christ stay with us all!
